The National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) is the leading independent educational research organisation in the UK. We are involved in work that spans many interesting and challenging areas, notably: assessment, evaluation and international comparison studies. In the last few years NFER has successfully created a Trials Unit to work specifically within the growing field of Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs). Whilst a common methodology within clinical research it is a relatively new methodology within the UK education sector, but has gained wider acceptance since the creation of the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF). The EEF primarily fund the evaluation of educational interventions to benefit disadvantaged pupils and their preferred methodology is the RCT.
Whilst the NFER Trials Unit is run by an experienced Trial Manager and Statistician, Dr Ben Styles, and contains a number of other senior researchers and senior statisticians, there is a need to increase our capacity and to have an experienced Trial Manager to assist the current team during periods of high activity. We are therefore looking for an individual who would like to join the Foundation as a Research Associate (“RA”) to provide this type of support.
RAs are engaged on a project by project basis. Key skills would include:
• At least five years’ experience in trial management including the production of trial protocols
• An understanding of individual and cluster-randomised designs, consent issues, data collection, the randomisation process and how the design of the trial relates to analysis.
The role would support the work of Trials Unit researchers, primarily providing support and advice, although during periods of high activity there may be a need to take on project leadership responsibilities. The main offices are based in Slough and whilst remote working can be arranged occasional meetings in Slough will be necessary.
If you would like further information about this role please email Simon Rutt, Head of Statistics, [log in to unmask], or Dr Ben Styles, [log in to unmask] in the Centre for Statistics. Please submit your CV and letter of interest to [log in to unmask]
Please note that this post is exempt from the ‘Rehabilitation of Offenders Act’ and the successful applicant will need to provide a satisfactory DBS Certificate; further details of NFER’s Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checking procedure are available on request.
Closing date: 30th June 2015
