Hi Theresa

While our D/S team do not have this problem all the time, there are occasions when they do get issues with FBS samples and on investigation I find that the error code provides says that there are micro bubbles in the sample. I don't know how they get in, but they seem to. To get around this, they take multiple samples off the infant when taking FBS samples and this generally works.

I am trying to see whether it is viable to move towards FBS Lactate testing as this is a much smaller sample, less distressing for the mother (and the infant as it is a smaller sample size) as the testing is done in the room and results available in 15-20 seconds without a person going out of the room to do the testing. In the NICE guidance, Lactate is mentioned before pH which makes me wonder...

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

Karen

Subject: Fetal Scalp samples and BGA

Can I ask if anybody else has real trouble with their Delivery Suite staff being able to obtain enough of a fetal scalp sample to run for pH on blood gas analysers, especially the ABL90?

Our ward staff are really struglling and are sure it is the fault of the ABL90! Info from other sites may help them to see the issue more objectively.

Thanks,

Theresa
