Dear John,
People can’t take copies of full programmes. However, under the new exceptions in UK copyright law it would be possible to request an extract from a programme, for non-commercial research or private study - see page 5 of https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/375956/Libraries_Archives_and_Museums.pdf.
The law states that a 'reasonable proportion' may be copied. We've not tested this as yet, because the law is new and no one has asked, but it would probably be measured at 5% of the programme. If the student wanted such copies, they would need to ask through me, as it isn’t possible to download the programmes in our Reading Rooms.
Luke

Dear Luke,
this is very interesting. Can people make copies when they visit the library too?
best

The British Library's Broadcast News service has daily Al Jazeera English broadcasts from January 2011. At that time we were recording one hour of AJE per day (the Newshour programme at 11pm), but expanded this to three hours a few months later. We also have daily recordings from 14 other TV news channels at that time (all those available in the UK via Freeview or Freesat). The programmes can only be accessed on our sites at St Pancras in London and Boston Spa in Yorkshire.
More information on Broadcast News is here: http://www.bl.uk/collection-guides/television-and-radio-news

Subject: TV coverage Arab Spring
Dear Colleagues,
I have a PhD student researching the TV coverage of the Arab Spring with a particular focus on Egypt, Syria and Jordan.
He is looking for the TV coverage by Al Jazeera (Arab and English) starting on 25 January 2011 and for the next 18 days.
Does anyone have any recordings of this? Several archives do not seem to have recorded these particular days.
Many thank and best wishes,
Christian
