Hi Mike,
Yes, this is a good question in regards to social media sites and I will
leave it to Sarah Saunders also of this list to tell you why you should for
external purposes.
I am busy embedding as much IPTC metadata into all our images because we
are moving to DAMS system where our staff will be able to much more
reliably find the image they require by the extensive use of metadata. So
internally it is vital for us.
I would suggest the increasing use of DAMS systems in our sector means that
metadata use will increase. So it's going to happen regardless of social
media sites, which then I imagine means that they will catch up with us and
not strip it out eventually. (maybe)
