Dear All,
My name is Bahijja and I'm a postdoctoral researcher (and a pharmacist) at the University College London School of Pharmacy. I recently started a social enterprise called STEAM:ED Collective which aims to engage all with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics through the arts (including performing arts).
The company has received funding from the Royal Society of Chemistry and the L&Q Foundation to participate in the Brockley Street art Festival (which starts today!). This will be the company's first event! The funding is going towards the development of two science murals in the area of astrophysics and chemical sciences. We are working together with Dr Fossey ( UCL Department of Physics and Astronomy’s University of London Observatory) to convey his research in extrasolar planet discoveries as well as his most recent discovery of the supernova SN 2014J in Messier 82 (aka The Cigar Galaxy) which took place January 2014. As well as by developing a mural showcasing chemical elements discovered by British chemists such as the element potassium (which was first isolated by Sir Humphry Davy) for example. We will then link the properties of these elements with their historical and current uses. We aim to not only make this an informative experience for the public, but also provoke their curiosity in exploring the underlying concepts of the chemical sciences and astrophysics.
The two amazing artists involved are Patricio Forrester (Artmongers, http://artmongersaction.org/patricio/) and Zara Gaze (http://sandalism.co.uk/).
In addition to this, we have also teamed up with Science Showoff to bring a fun science comedy night on Wednesday 3rd of June discussing some of the science themes that feature as part of the Brockley Street Art Festival. To book tickets and find out more about who's performing please visit www.steamedcollective.com . Pre-book your tickets as soon as possible to avoid dissapointment as tickets are selling fast and will not be available on the door.
I hope to see you there!
Thank you!
Bahijja
