On Saturday 16 May 2015 a symposium will take place at Watermans that
addresses many themes and issues close to the New Media Curating list
concerns particularly with respect to making, collecting and conserving
digital and media artworks created with systems that evolve over time.

This event is part of the Main Gallery exhibition at Watermans, Brown &
Son: Art That Makes Itself [1], 31 March - 31 May 2015 curated by Irini
Papadimtriou and Bronac Ferram.
You are invited to an exciting afternoon of talks, debates and
presentation about the history and future of digital culture with some
leading speakers from the arts and design world. This will be a unique
gathering of practitioners from the early days of computer art through
to today and at the close of the event a new book will be launched with
fascinating new essays from Grant Taylor, Golan Levin, Jim Boulton,
Peter Fowler, Maria Chatzichristodoulou (aka Maria X) and Paul and
Daniel Brown.
Symposium speakers are leading computer art pioneer Frieder Nake,;
Margaret Boden, Professor of Cognitive Science Sussex University; Jim
Boulton, digital archaeologist; artists Paul and Daniel Brown; Maria
Chatzichristodoulou (aka Maria X), lecturer in Performance & New Media
at Hull University; Douglas Dodds, Senior Curator at Victoria & Albert
Museum; Nick Lambert, CAS chair and Lecturer in digital art and culture;
Nico Macdonald, writer on design and innovation; artist and computer art
pioneer Ernest Edmonds; Irini Papadimitriou Head of New Media at
Watermans Arts Centre. This event is organised in association with the
Computer Arts Society.
Watermans has supported a new publication. Art That Makes Itself, Brown
& Son - Purveyors of Digital Images since 1968 has been designed by
Daniel Brown and edited by Bronaċ Ferran, with newly commissioned texts
from Grant Taylor, Douglas Dodds, Golan Levin, Jim Boulton, Peter Fowler
and Maria Chatzichristodoulou with accompanying artworks and new writing
by Daniel and Paul Brown and a foreword by Irini Papadimitriou. The book
preview will take place at the close of the symposium with drinks and
some speeches to celebrate the arrival of this publication.
