Jenna,
I understand you currently run Modes for Windows, rather the current
Modes Complete software. This still provides you with a range of export
options, of which the most flexible will be XML. (The default 'tag
file' export won't help you with transfer to non-Modes systems.)
CALM will import records which are presented in the so-called Natural
format, which is a simple text-based representation of the data (rather
tag-file-like, in fact). It also claims to import other formats,
including XML, but a glance at the documentation suggests that this
import option is only supported for their primary Archives application,
and for EAD records.
Obviously, you will need to map the Modes data to the CALM data
structure. This will require a knowledge of the semantics of the fields
offered by CALM. You could write an XSLT transform to convert the XML
which is exported from Modes to Natural format, and then import that
directly. Assuming that you can map all the Modes fields you are using,
the main challenge I can foresee is how to squash Modes' repeating
fields and repeating groups into CALM's flat field structure. You may
also have to alter the format of certain data fields such as dates and
personal names.
I'm sure that Axiell will be able to help you with this process.
Best wishes,
Richard
