Promoting and Enhancing Reuse of Information throughout the Content Lifecycle taking account of Evolving Semantics

Modelling evolving digital ecosystems

PERICLES project partners attended the third technical workshop organised by Xerox Research Centre Europe (XRCE) in Grenoble (27-29 April), to review the latest version of the Linked Resource Model (LRM), a general purpose modelling language that is being developed within PERICLES to enable the description of evolving digital ecosystems.

Besides the LRM specification, the topics discussed at the workshop involved LRM-based domain-specific representations and ecosystem modelling aspects, as well as investigations on the overall functional architecture of the project.

PERICLES Workshop

'From Semantics of Change to Change of Semantics'

Change management is one of the key element of the modelling approach developed within the PERICLES project to secure the long-term usability of digital resources. This is also the theme of the 1/2 day workshop which will take place at the University of Borås on the 19th May. During the event project members will present how a formal language for representing linked resources (LRM) can address change on an abstract level, how this language can be deployed for domain-specific representations, and how the study of semantic drifts can be tackled in these environments. The event will include an open-space session for further discussions and exchange of ideas. The full programme is available here<http://pericles-project.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=58df5a080c65b0a214c4f4e96&id=0d1b21843d&e=c2ed7caba5>.

Launch of CoP 'Lives of digital things'

As we continue to engage with expert practitioners, efforts have been directed towards PERICLES Communities of Practice (CoP), defined as a group of selected individuals from various professional roles who are representative of a given industrial, cultural or academic field and periodically gathered together to focus on a current fundamental question or set of issues relevant to the preservation of digital objects thereby advancing the field.

We are happy to announce the kick-off meeting of the first Community of Practice (CoP) ‘Lives of digital things’ took place on April 16th 2015!

This group brings together different practitioners from science, art, archive and records management to compare high level conceptual framework in which the ‘life’ of objects are conceived within these different contexts. This discourse will provide a rare opportunity for us to reflect together on our existing disciplinary frameworks and develop new conceptual frameworks to help us to move practice in long term digital preservation forward and also inform the research undertaken within PERICLES. In the first meeting the participants exchanged their views on the concept of lives of digital things in order to inform each other about the different approaches towards the topic of discussion in their work and field of research. The next five planned meetings will be each dedicated to a specific topic that relates to lives of digital things.

Please find further information on the following planned meetings on the PERICLES website<http://pericles-project.us10.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=58df5a080c65b0a214c4f4e96&id=0bb76e2e92&e=c2ed7caba5>.

Of particular interest for this community is the Continuum Theory, which has evolved out of the records management community alongside theories that have evolved within the contemporary art conservation community as well as the archive and scientific data communities.

In this video Barbara Reeds (Recordkeeping Innovation) gives an introductory presentation on the records continuum, and discusses its relevance for PERICLES with Mark Hedges from King’s College London, and Pip Laurenson and Anna Henry from TATE. The records continuum is a pioneering model for recordkeeping that regards it holistically as a continuous and dynamic enterprise, and this raised several parallels with the research themes and interests of PERICLES.

An exemplar in data reuse: 2015 International Space Apps Challenge

Events such as this offer the possibility to raise the profile of space science data and to encourage innovative analysis, reuse and combination of datasets. The event continues to grow in popularity; statistics from this year's event show that 12574 participants from 135 locations participated with a total of 928 projects. From a preservation perspective, this type of rapid-innovation activity clearly raises some challenging reuse cases adding further insight into one of the research domains (space science) currently explored by the PERICLES project...
