I suspect that many of you – like myself – are currently caught up in marking student dissertations or supporting your students to get their dissertations completed and handed in. If you come across any dissertations related to health information or if you’ve supervised a student looking at an aspect of health information then please get in touch. I edit the regular feature called ‘Dissertations into practice’ for the Health Information and Libraries Journal (HILJ) and I’m currently on the lookout for new articles. So far I’ve published work from graduates from Aberystwyth, City, Northumbria, Sheffield and York as well as Panjab University in India and my own institution – Brighton. The feature remains one of the journal’s strong points and the students who’ve had articles published have been delighted with the result. I welcome a broad range of topics and so far this has included lis services in the NHS, health information provision in public libraries and the information seeking practices of patients and health workers. The thinking behind the feature is: to encourage students and recent graduates to write for publication and to highlight the potential impact of student research for practice. Articles can be co-written with a dissertation or workplace supervisor and are essentially an extended abstract of the student dissertation, highlighting the research methods used, the key findings and the implications for practice. I have produced guidelines for the student authors and give them a lot of support along the way. If you know of a project which you think might fit please let me know.
