Hi Bernadette,

That's an interesting idea which might work for the staff awareness notes. However, the full summary may be more difficult to add as a workflow. We've found that the workflow editor becomes more clunky to use for long documents. In addition, there's a lot of formatting in the latter document which is likely to be lost when transferring it to a workflow. However, we could experiment and see what happens. However we choose to make this documentation available, we'll let people know via [log in to unmask] and [log in to unmask]

Thanks,

Thurstan

Hello Thurstan

It sounds as if the BL reports could indeed be useful. Any chance of mounting them in RDA's Global Workflows, to keep them handy?

Best wishes,

Bernadette

Hi Bernadette

I've listed the British Library's responses below. As regards documentation which summarizes the changes which have taken place, Mark Ehlert's report seems very thorough.

I wonder whether the coummunity might also be interested in looking at the documentation I mention under Q2. Our summary documentation breaks down into a couple of reports: staff awareness notes which run to a couple of pages and a full summary which goes through the RDA text in proposal order underlining / striking through / bracketing the additions / deletions which have occurred. Hitherto we've only made this documentation available internally but we could put it up on the British Library website in future.

Q1: Were you aware of the RDA update? How did you become aware of it?

We were aware of the update through the British Library’s membership on the Joint Steering Committee for RDA and liaison with ALA Publishing. Information on the release schedule for the RDA is also to be found on the RDA Toolkit

Development blog:

http://www.rdatoolkit.org/development

Q2: To what extent were you aware of the changes before the Update was released?

Information on the changes taking place was cascaded to the British Library’s RDA Toolkit workflow editors three weeks in advance and policy groups a week in advance so that amendments could be made to documentation which coincided with the release. A general summary of the changes was cascaded to staff to coincide with the release itself.

Q3: What is your plan for implementing the Update?

Implementation is in progress. Most of the RDA Toolkit workflows have been updated and policy documentation is being amended where necessary.

Q4: What are the barriers to implementation in your institution?

There is no barrier to implementation of the update as regards those processing areas which already apply RDA.

RDA implementation at the British Library has taken place in a MARC21 context. Because it does not create records in MARC21, the British Library’s Sound Archive has been excluded from this process for the time being.

Q5: What impact do you anticipate the changes will have on workflows?

Generally minimal. Removal of ‘core if’ status for distribution and manufacture statements as well as copyright date effected all bibliographic workflows. The change to the main instruction for recording colour content which now mandates the use of terms ‘monochrome’ and ‘polychrome’ resulted in the British Library applying a new alternative instruction which allows the continued use of terms ‘black and white’ and ‘colour’.

Q6: What are your views on the frequency and scope of RDA Updates?

The frequency of updates seems about right from our perspecitve. Making them annual means that sufficient time is available to submit RDA change proposals, review and comment on those proposals from other constituencies and then prepare for their implementation before an update takes place. The scope of updates is set to change in future to concentrate on changes of a strategic nature (e.g. internationalization) rather than wordsmithing existing instructions or making changes which could be dealt with by institutional policy statements / application profiles. Besides the annual update, there are additional RDA Toolkit releases which take place every few months during the year. These cover minor editorial changes to the content such as typos, formatting and amendments to the lists of relationship designators.

Best wishes,

Thurstan
