Hi Anna
I assume the Grade Centre columns in question have been correctly hidden? (i.e. using "Show/ Hide to Students")
and that Blackboard is working correctly and hiding that column from students in My Grades?
In that case presumably the problem is that students can still see the Total column, which displays by default, and is nothing but a nuisance.
Our advice here is always to hide that column: https://www.bb.reading.ac.uk/bbcswebdav/xid-4356935_4
but of course the advice is not always followed.
I believe some institutions may have found a way to hide the Total column by default in new courses, which would be a real boon. I'm not sure if this can be achieved without, at some point, going into every single course and hiding it.
In my notes from one of the Roadmap sessions at the recent Blackboard TLC, looking at New Experience Learn (i.e. the version which none of us is likely to go to for quite some while), I've written that one of the proposed improvements to the Grade Centre is
"No Total or weighted total columns will appear in Grade Centre by default: can be easily added as you work in Grade Centre".
So one day, this problem might disappear.
Yours, ever the optimist,
Andy

Subject: Leaking grades: Advice requested!
Hi everyone,
It's marking season and we're facing the problem caused when grades are hidden in the Bb grade centre, but still visible to students through My Grades. Does anyone have any advice? My main two questions are
1. How much of a problem is this for you at your institutions?
2. What approaches you are taking to prevent grades leaking to students in this way? (I found a couple of suggested workarounds on the mailing list from early 2014 (about specific settings in grade centre and removing My Grades) , but wondered if there is any more current advice)
Looking forward to hearing from you!
Anna
