Dear colleague,
Celebration of SS Windrush and Diversity in the NHS
Date: 17 June
Time: 1700-1900
Venue: St Thomas’s Hospital, London SE1 7EH .
You are invited to join us for a. celebration of the passengers of the SS Empire Windrush and their contribution and legacy to the NHS workforce that we have today. Sam King, survivor of the Windrush, will be our special guest.
The arrival of the Windrush helped to mark a new chapter in both the birth of our NHS and the growth of multicultural Britain. However seven decades later our black and ethnic minorities are still under-represented at senior levels in the NHS workforce. We hope this event will also provide us with an opportunity to examine the challenges we currently face to address this, as well as highlighting the progress that we are making on this important
agenda.
We hope that you can join us.
RSVP to: http://www.events.england.nhs.uk/nhs-england/588
Yours sincerely,
Simon Stevens

Background information
This event will mark the day (June 22nd 1948) when the liner 'Empire Windrush' arrived in England from the Caribbean with lots of people that would go on to make-up the significant proportion of the NHS workforce - as dramatized in the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics.
The arrival of the Windrush helped to mark a new chapter in both the birth of our NHS and the growth of multicultural Britain. However seven decades later our black and ethnic minorities are still under-represented at senior levels in the NHS workforce. Subject: Mary Seacole Memorial Statue Appeal - JustGiving Last Lap Fundraising Campaign page £80K to raise
To: Gina Osbourne <[log in to unmask]>
Update
The Mary Seacole statue is being cast at the foundry we have made excellent progress and aim to have the statue unveiled by a member of the Royal Family in late September or early October this year.
We have been remarkably successful as a charity and have already raised £305,000 and much of this has come from small contributions including schools, nurses, army units and others. We have also had many larger contributions made by individuals and organisations in cash or by contributing their skills and services. The whole enterprise will have cost over £500,000 by the time of the unveiling.
The statue is an imposing and artistic creation. It rises some 16ft off the ground and weighs 17 tons. It will stand in front of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital opposite the Houses of Parliament and will be the first statue to a named black women in Britain.
So this is both an exciting but also fraught time for the trustees all of whom have worked hard to make this happen. Well, just before Christmas we were hoping for a significant grant from a charitable trust. We cannot be sure that we will now receive a grant so we have to plan for a last minute cash shortfall.
The cash shortfall is £80,000. If I can persuade 80 people to give £1000 or better still, 20 people to give £4,000; work will continue without any delay and in the autumn you will see the statue outside the hospital. You will be able to stand and admire it, touch it and recall the incredible experience and work of Mary Seacole.
If you would like to discuss this request in more detail please don’t hesitate to contact me and I will inform our Chair Lord Soley. He will be happy to see you at the House of Lords to explain in detail what amazing progress we have made and yet how much we depend on this last minute appeal.
Finally even if you can’t manage £1000 or £4000 you can always make whatever contribution you can afford through our last lap campaign just giving link below:
http://campaign.justgiving.com/charity/maryseacolememorial/LastLap
We will always be grateful for any contribution however large or small, please spread the word.
Best wishes,
Gina Osbourne
