We would like to ask for your support in regard to the loss of a valuable and unique resource here at Manchester Metropolitan University.
The Visual Resources Centre at Manchester School of Art contains more than 300,000 slides, gathered over the past 50 years through teaching practice in the art school. It is a unique historic artefact and much-loved source of creative inspiration. Despite this, the university has decided that up to 90% of the collection is to be disposed of. By the start of next term, it will no longer exist. We believe this to be an irrevocable loss.
I held an exhibition back in November to bring attention to this issue to the larger University community, which was received very well. We have just gone live on a project concerning the proposed closure and disposal of an important Visual Resources Centre and its slide collections at Manchester Metropolitan University.
In the last 24 hrs it has been officially confirmed that the resource will definitely close in the summer. I believe very passionately that this will be a great loss to many and a grave mistake that will be regretted in years to come.
We are asking people to adopt a slide and I wondered whether you might be interested in joining. Please see the attached invite for details following the instructions to take you to the blog.
The project is now live, so you will be able to view the first adopted slides posted to the blog. It makes for some great reading!
If you are not located near Manchester and would like to be part of this participatory artwork, then please do the following as alternative to visiting the archive.
Go to the https://www.flickr.com/people/mmuvisualresources/ and choose a slide from the 1500 online images. Email Visual Resources Curator [log in to unmask] mentioning me (Kristin), the adopt a slide project and the image you have chosen. Your adopted slide will be photographed and emailed to you directly.
Please then write a response to your adopted slide. Then follow the instructions on the blog on how to post.
I do hope you decide to add your voice to the debate. It would be great to have you on board.
All my very best wishes
Kristin Marshall
