Following up Juliette’s most recent post, the term object is evolving, due
to the emergence of interactive and participatory art, but does still have
a final meaning. I have been on many juries, and what the artists submit
must be a finished, complete artwork. Incomplete work is not acceptable.
That said, digital installation, sculpture, sound art, and video,
Internet-based work are all “objects”, even though their media varies and
multiple media can comprise them. Where the problem comes in is how do you
define the object if it is an interactive work, or is a site-specific
installation? Most of these works need to be documented in order to
understand the concepts behind them and how they work. Would the specific
site installation and documentation now be defined as the object?
