HOW - Heathrow Orchard Walks invite for 26th April 2015
Artists Dr Kate Corder and Dr Nick Furguson invite you to participate in the next Heathrow Orchard walk on Sunday 26 April 2015 in the environs of Heathrow, observing contested land at threat of a Third Runway. This walk will visit Monuments of former agricultural cultivation at Harmondsworth, including Richard and Ann Cox's grave (Cox Apple), the medieval Harmondsworth Barn and orchard residue. We will walk across the constructed Harmondsworth Moor, which contains rocks from the dismantled Waterloo Bridge. We will continue to Poyle and traverse a disused railway line, then we will return via Stanwell Moor to Longford and visit the Sheraton Heathrow orchard planted in the hotel's garden. The walk will reveal unexpected contradictions of London urban rurality, where aggregate gravel farming digs in to geological time decaying agricultural land and pastoral scenes coexist with aircraft and motorway noise. We will discuss histories of land cultivation and potential changes to existing land and communities.
Prior to the airport (1946), Heathrow and the surrounding land flourished with orchards and market gardens supplying vegetables and fruit to London and local communities. The land in the area remains heavily contested through suggestions of airport expansion. UK political parties are not including airport expansion in the General Election, therefore airport expansion is currently of "no" political concern.
