I haven't heard of anyone else having this issue on star-2014A, or on
Mavericks (and star-2014A was built on a Mavericks machine).

Okay, that's really strange. Gaia should work fine without the .skycat
directory already existing -- the gaia.sh script just creates it itself
if its not already there...

To see if I'm understanding this -- you have two OSX machines, one
running star-2014A on mavericks and one running star-2015A on Yosemite.
Neither of them can open Gaia. If you keep your existing ~/.skycat
directory, then you get an X Error 'BadValue' from X_OpenFont, which
looks like somethings trying to load a non-existent Font. If you move
that directory you get the above error from gaia_wish.

You have an up-to-date XQuartz, and also some fink X11 packages you use
for other software.

Other X11 apps work for you -- e.g. you can use the KAPPA command
'display' with dev=xw and it will happily launch a window, display maps
etc.?

I'm afraid I'm really at a loss -- I could suggest trying to reinstall
XQuartz and the starlink software, and possibly try temporarily removing
fink.

I'm not sure if we have many users who use fink for package managers --
we use homebrew, and I think there are other people using macports. I
don't really have any idea if it could be doing things that affect you.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help -- I've cc'd this to the Starlink
developers list in the hope someone might have some ideas for you.
