Tony Atkinson’s latest book, Inequality - what can be done?, is in many ways his follow-up to Thomas Piketty. It considers income as well as wealth, poverty as well as nequality. The first third of the 300 pages of main text are devoted to diagnosis. The rest considers a very broad range of policies for tackling inequality and poverty and sets out his preferred package with a focus on the UK. The final part provides a critique of arguments against taking such action and strengthens the case for it.
The Enlightened Economist, Diane Coyle, has written about the book in a number of blogs. Below is a link to her fullest one - the earlier, briefer, ones can be reached by clicking on her ‘previous posts’ below the two book covers illustrated. I would endorse her comments.
Her blog includes a link that takes you to Amazon (hard cover £13.57). If you would prefer another, I have added Tony’s own link to Harvard UP (cloth £19.95) below the link to her blog.
You might also look out for Piketty’s review that should be out in the New York Review of Books soon.
Best wishes, yours, Adrian
