Hi Zoe, how about the wonderful street scene in Lucy and Tom's Day, by Shirley Hughes, dating from the early 1960's?
Coincidentally I was looking at the original dummy book spread in the Seven Stories Collection when I read your post!

Subject: Picture books about high streets / different types of shops
Dear all,
Reading Martin Salisbury's new 100 Great Children's Picturebooks (which
was such a treat) I was reminded of Eric Ravilious' High Street (text,
JM Richards), which got me thinking about Alice Melvin's The High
Street, and then a 2nd hand book which my kids love, 1st published
in1899, The Book of Shops by E.V. Lucas and F. D. Bedford.
I'd be most grateful if members of the list could point me to other
similar books ie illustrated or picture books focussing on the shops and
businesses you find (found) on the high street /main shopping area (any
period of history, any country/language).
Thanks in anticipation,
Zoe
