medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Jonathan Hughes, in his "The Religious Life of Richard III" says (p36-7 "That his campaigns were driven by a degree of moral fervour is indicated by his enthusiasm for the cult of St Ninian (the Briton who converted the Picts to Christianity), the patron saint of the western march towards Scotland where Richard was warden". Hughes goes on to point out the ways in which this enthusiasm worked itself out in Richard's chantry foundations and in other ways.

The college he endowed at York was dedicated to St George and St Ninian (see http://richardiii-ipup.org.uk/riii/7) and he left money in his will for masses to St George and St Ninian. George is understandable - but why Ninian? Patron saint of prisoners (by the later Middle Ages a sort of alternative to Leonard), and his foundation at Whitthorn had a daughter house near the Stanley stronghold on the Isle of Man.
Thoughts, anyone? Graham Jones??
