One of our departments used to tether some books so that they could be used for reference but not taken away. They used to drill a hole in the back cover of a hardback book and attach the chain there. They gave up and donated the books to the library.
Of course, there are ways round everything and it's fairly easy for someone to tear out individual pages or rip off the cover if they really want the contents. When I visited a university library in the 1970's (during my training) they showed me a book that looked fine until you opened it. Someone had used a razor blade to cut out all the pages, leaving only the margins so that the book didn't look damaged!
I'd look for another way of doing things. How about displaying a photocopy of the cover on a notice suggesting people ask the receptionist if they want to see a copy? Or buy a couple of copies and donate them to the local Public Library or hospital library and direct people there (again using a poster)?

Hi
I don't know the answer to this question or even where to start, so I though I'd ask if anyone else has experience of this.
One of my consultants has a patient information book (an actual book with a spine) that she wants to put in the waiting room outside her clinic. However, she is afraid it will get stolen. She wants to know therefore, how you would go about putting a chain on a book (I guess like in the medieval chained libraries) to keep it safely with us but readable.
Has anyone else done this? Or knows how to do this? I'm also going to contact LIS-RAREBOOKS but I wondered if anyone had had experience of this? Or could suggest who to go to?
Many thanks,
Best,
Genny
