Dear all,
The CILIP IL Group and InformAll have jointly published a blog post (http://www.researchinfonet.org/infolit/ridls/transferable-skills/uks-digital-future/) commenting on the recent House of Lords Digital Skills Committee report 'Make or break: the UK's digital future'.
Our conclusions are that whilst the report makes an important contribution to the debate about how society may derive most benefit from the ever-evolving nature of the UK’s digital economy, it places too much emphasis on digital skills rather than the underpinning and wider ranging concepts of digital and information literacy. To a large extent, it falls prey to the tendency to view digital skills in largely technical, ICT terms, without paying sufficient heed to the necessarily close relationship between digital and information literacies.
A version of the blog text, including all the concerns that it expresses, has been sent as a letter to the Committee's Chair, Baroness Morgan, and the report itself will be the subject of a debate in the House of Lords sometime after the general election. In due course, there will also be a formal Government response to the report. Watch this space!
Best wishes,
Stéphane
