Dear list,
We have performed a study where we compare the shape of the hipppocampus in two groups using FIRST. We have identified a cluster in the right hippocampus with group differences that seems largely confined to the CA1 subfield.
At least 15 papers have been published recently that compare groups using the same method, and based on the results, interpretations are made on involvement of hippocampal subfields. These are typically done on standard resolution T1W MRI images where neither automatic or manual segmentation of the subfields is feasable. Usually, previous anatomical knowledge is used to pinpoint the surface clusters to one or more of the hippocampal subfields.
My question is if the experts have any thoughts on using results from the vertex analysis in FIRST to localize clusters to one or more of the hippocampal subfields. We have not found any validation study that compares results from FIRST with proper subfield segmentation.
Best regards,
Carl Pintzka
