The Socialist and Critical Geography Specialty Group of the AAG is
pleased to announce that Cindi Katz will receive this year's James Blaut
Award and will give the James Blaut Memorial Lecture at next week's
meeting of the Association of American Geographers.
Dr. Katz's lecture will take place at 5:20 p.m. on Thursday, April 23 in
Columbus EF, Hyatt, East Tower, Gold Level, 151 E Upper Wacker Dr, Chicago
60601.
James Blaut's passing in 2000 was a terrible loss to the academy and
liberation struggles around the world. A radical geographer, Jim worked
indefatigably on issues of social justice and inequality; enhanced our
understanding of racism, imperialism, and Eurocentrism; and contributed
directly to the advancement of socialist and anti-colonial struggles. To
honor Jim Blaut's efforts, the annual James Blaut Award recognizes a
scholar who, over the course of her/his life, has (1) used a geographic
and historical analysis of capitalism to explain current social injustices
and inequalities; (2) promoted activism against oppressive power relations
both within and outside the academy; and (3) bridged socialist theory and
practice.
Dr. Katz is Professor and Executive Officer in the Earth and Environmental
Sciences Program at the City University of New York Graduate Center. A
dedicated scholar-teacher-activist, she has authored and edited numerous
articles, books, and book chapters, including The People, Place, and Space
Reader (co-edited with Jen Jack Gieseking, William Mangold, Setha Low, and
Susan Saegert), Growing Up Global: Economic Restructuring and Children's
Everyday Lives, and Life's Work: Geographies of Social Reproduction
(co-edited with Sallie A. Marston and Katharyne Mitchell), among many
other works.
We look forward to celebrating with you the work of Cindi Katz and the
legacy of James Blaut.
Sincerely,
Bob Ross
