LIBRARY AND ARCHIVE MATERIALS CONSERVATOR FOR THE LEATHER CONSERVATION CENTRE

Salary c£26-27,000 pa
The Leather Conservation Centre, is an internationally renowned organisation offering a comprehensive service in the conservation and restoration of objects (including library and archival materials) of historic, cultural and artistic importance made wholly or partly of leather or its related materials. The Centre is based in Northampton, UK (approximately one hour by train from London Euston and close to the M1).
The Centre has a vacancy for a Library and Archive Materials Conservator to carry out conservation on a wide range of items, including books of various binding styles, size and complexity and other archive materials on behalf of private and corporate clients.
Working as part of the small team at The Centre you will be required to propose, estimate and carry out conservation treatments with minimal supervision. You will be able to manage your work to ensure that estimates and deadlines are met, communicate effectively with colleagues, clients and visitors, and be able to keep clear, detailed and accurate records of all treatments undertaken. You may be required undertake work on site periodically and supervise students and interns as part of the teaching role of the Centre.
The successful candidate will be expected to expand the current client base.
In addition, we are looking for candidates with -
• A recognised book conservation qualification and a minimum of 3-5 years relevant experience
• Demonstrated knowledge of current book conservation techniques and an understanding of a range of historical bookbinding structures
• Demonstrated knowledge of current conservation techniques for archive materials, such as parchment deeds and wax seals.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the chemical and physical causes of deterioration of library and archive materials
• A commitment to keep up to date with developments in the field of library and archive materials conservation and applying them where appropriate
• A commitment to develop your professional skills and share knowledge with other conservators at the Centre
• The ability to work independently and as part of a team, as required
• Good communication and administrative skills including computer literacy
• Clean driving licence
ICON Accreditation or working towards accreditation is desirable
