We are looking for an undergraduate student interested in a career in medical statistics and epidemiology to take up an eight-week NIHR Research Methods Internship at the Farr Institute of Health Informatics Research, UCL. The intern will work on an extended research project within the Department of Infectious Disease Informatics, which may lead to a publication. They will have the opportunity to collaborate with academic staff and learn more about biostatistics, epidemiology and health informatics.
The research project will use data from the FluWatch study, which was a large community cohort study designed to look at the biological and behavioural determinants of influenza transmission. Potential topics include health seeking behaviour in the 2009 swine flu pandemic and the link between social deprivation and the risk of infection.
Responsibilities for the intern will include:
- Development of a research question using data from the FluWatch study.
- Carry out data cleaning and management of a large cohort dataset.
- Develop skills on specialist statistical software packages.
- Conduct relevant statistical analyses, starting with descriptive statistics before using more advanced methods (such as regression modelling) to answer questions of interest.
- Work independently in order to meet set deadlines, prioritising important tasks.
- Collaborate with colleagues and attend meetings in order to discuss methods and results of project.
- Undertake relevant training courses at UCL.
- Write up a report of research for publication
The salary for this eight-week internship is £3500 (subject to National Insurance and tax deductions). Applicants must be in the penultimate year of their undergraduate degree (second year of a three year course or third year of a four year course) in mathematics, statistics or another subject with a substantial quantitative component. They should be predicted a 2:1 degree of higher and be interested in statistical research with application to medicine. It is essential that they have familiarity with probability and statistics, and experience with statistical software such as Stata or R is desirable. Candidates must have the right to work in the UK.
