Risk prediction in individuals with a family history of cancer
A PhD project in statistical genetics is available in the School of Medicine at the University of Leeds for October 2015 entry. A fully-funded Medical Research Council (MRC) studentship is available at the University to be awarded competitively to the best candidate across a number of possible projects.
The project will be supervised by Professor Jenny Barrett (Medicine) and Dr Arief Gusnanto (School of Mathematics).
Recently many inherited genetic variants have been identified that increase the risk of particular cancers or other common complex diseases. Although each of these has only a small effect on risk, taken together they have a bigger impact, especially when applied to individuals who have a family history of the disease. The aim of this project is to develop statistical methods for using this new information to help in counselling people who are at risk of the disease because of family history, so that their risk can be estimated more accurately and preventive measures tailored to the individual.
Further details of the studentship conditions, including how to apply, can be found at (http://www.findaphd.com/search/PhDDetails.aspx?CAID=860&LID=757). Informal enquiries can be made to Jenny Barrett ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>).
The project would suit a graduate in a mathematical or statistical subject. No prior knowledge of genetics is required.
The studentship will cover the cost of tuition fees (UK/EU rate) and a maintenance grant (approximately £14,000 for session 2015/16). An allowance towards travel/training costs will also be available. The studentship will provide funding for 3.5 years subject to satisfactory progress during the research candidature. UK applicants will be eligible for a full award paying tuition fees and maintenance. European Union applicants will be eligible for an award paying tuition fees only, except in exceptional circumstances, or where residency has been established for more than 3 years prior to the start of the course.
The closing date for applications is 7th May 2015.
