Research Statistician, MRC Biostatistics Unit, Cambridge
MRC band 4. 3-year Fixed Term. Salary scale £27,084 - £32,324
This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious Research Statistician to join the team of Dr Brian Tom, Programme Leader, and carry out cutting edge statistical methodology research in dementia. You will join the internationally-renowned MRC Biostatistics Unit and a team which has a strong focus on stratified medicine and longitudinal data modelling.
As part of its involvement in the 5-year European Prevention of Alzheimer's Dementia (EPAD) Initiative (mainly sponsored by the European Commission and the European pharmaceutical industry (via EFPIA) under the auspices of the Innovative Medicines Initiative Joint Undertaking (IMI JU)), the Unit is seeking to appoint a research statistician in Biostatistics who will contribute to the statistical underpinning of the EPAD Cohort Protocol and the EPAD Trial Master Protocol. The work consists of (i) modelling data on an on-going basis coming from parent cohorts, the EPAD Register, the prospective EPAD Cohort and other data sources such as from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative and the EPAD trial to refine disease models across the EPAD risk spectrum (e.g. trajectory risk modelling of cognitive decline), (ii) contributing to the building of novel interventional adaptive designs and (iii) developing, where appropriate, statistical methodology for these tasks.
By the time they take up the appointment, the successful applicant will ideally have a PhD in a strongly quantitative subject, preferably statistics. Experience in statistical models for the analysis of longitudinal and event history data, exposure to clinical trials, and statistical programming experience in statistical packages (e.g. R) or in programming languages (e.g. C++) would be advantageous. Applications are also welcome from those with more generic statistical experience who are interested in applying their skills to the dementia area or from applicants with an MSc in statistics with a number of years' experience in medical research. The post holders should have good communication skills and be able to contribute substantially to the writing of scientific papers.
The position is within the programme "Statistics for Stratified Medicine and Analysis of Complex Phenotypes" and will be line managed by its programme leader, Dr Brian Tom. The post holder will also work closely with other members of his team and with other teams within the Unit.
The MRC Biostatistics Unit aims to advance medical science by the development, application and dissemination of statistical methods. It is one of Europe's leading biostatistics research institutions and includes many internationally renowned statisticians. It provides a privileged environment for conducting research within the Cambridge biomedical environment.
Starting salary will be in the range of £29,567 - £32,324 per annum, supported by a flexible pay and reward policy, 30 days annual leave entitlement, and an optional MRC final salary Pension Scheme.
