Hi Michelle
We have blood glucose meters and a HemoCue meter. Theatres would also like a blood gas analyser - but haven't made a formal request yet.
CoaguCheks are in use in the Pre-Assessment area (this works well) and are under no circumstances to go to Theatres - as I know the anaesthetists thought it would be useful in monitoring coagulopathy (they were corrected).
Kind regards
Karen

Subject: General Theatre POCT
Hi All
Please could I ask what POCT General Theatres use within other Trusts? I continue to receive enquiries regarding POCT in theatres, each time relating to new tests. Currently they have glucose meters and Hemocues, and are due to install a blood gas analyser within the next couple of months. They have enquired about CoaguChek devices, and have now started to enquire about platelet function testing, as the haematology laboratory does not currently offer this test, and the cardiac theatre department have been performing it on their behalf for a small number of patients.
I am a little worried that they are working towards creating their own lab, similar to that in cardiac theatres, however it is completely unecessary in general theatres. I would really like to provide them with evidence of what POCT general theatres have access to in other Trusts before they continue on their quest to develop a small lab of their own.
Best wishes
Michelle
