Hi Everyone,
I'm a grad student at Washington State University in the Pacific Northwest of the United States just getting started with paleoethnobotany. I'm doing my thesis at a site in NE Washington on the Colubmia Plateau. While I haven't excavated a lot of it yet, it looks like I've got some sort of structure that was intentionally burned. I've got a fair amount of charcoal to ID but right now I'm looking at the seeds. As my professor is new to this region and I'm new to paleoethnobotany, I've got a lot of unknowns. I've attached a couple pictures of some of these specimens and I've listed a little extra info and some of our guesses below. Any input at all, even just an idea about families to look into, is greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
Molly Carney
Buds - I've been finding a lot of these and it was suggested that these could potentially be some sort of bud?
Fragaria - Another hypothesis. Still waiting on comparison seeds from the USDA
Unknown 1 - These are rounded and look like seeds, but with "wings" extending out. Looks kind of like Mimosa seeds...
Unknown 2 - No idea but the surface is very distinct.
Unknown Small - I've been finding a lot of these in my samples. Fungal sclerotia?
Unknown Large - Again, these are all over the place, but don't have any distinguishing morphological features that I can see.
Stems - I've found a lot of stems/twig like pieces. I was mostly just curious if anyone had any thoughts on this.
Gourds - I don't know if this is gourd-like, but the tissue inside looks a little bit like a gourd (see the side pic)
Unknown 4 - Pretty big and almost looks like a scale. Again, any thoughts?
