Subject: Canary Wharf Group gets Govt £200m for 3,000 luxury homes
Dear Group,
I see a report in some of the technical press (ackn. Brownfield Briefing) that,
"the DCLG has announced that it is loaning the Canary Wharf Group £200m to get 3,000 luxury homes and other development built in London Docklands – about the same amount of loans it is offering to all 10 brownfield housing zones outside London put together!
“London’s Docklands have been completely transformed in the last 20 years into an exciting place to live and work,” said Communities Secretary. “Today’s £200m deal will ensure this continues long into the future with the development of Wood Wharf, delivering thousands of homes as well as job opportunities.”
Canary Wharf Group chairman said, “This is just the type of targeted and practical assistance that our sector needs to help deal with the housing shortage in London.” It includes 3,610 homes (only 600 of them affordable), 180,000m² of offices, a school - and retail units to meet the current shortage at Canary Wharf".
I wonder whether the rest of the Group (like me) are reassured to known that government is pulling out all the stops to help The City’s low income and first time buyers get on the housing ladder?
Best wishes,
David E Jackson
