Hackney Archives consists of a small professional team, working to preserve the Borough's historic archives collections and increase public use through creative engagement. The Archives Manager post (previously titled Principal Archivist) is a core member of the heritage management team alongside the Museum Manager and Learning Manager, led by the Heritage Manager. The mission of the Heritage team is to help local people to explore and share in Hackney's rich and diverse past, so that they can influence a better future through active participation and a greater sense of belonging.
The role of the Archives Manager is both practical and strategic, with the ability to improve collections access through professional knowledge, experience and creative engagement to inspire a new generation of users. Hackney Archives has a strong collection of public and community archives mostly dating from the mid-19th century and throughout the 20th century, yet our oldest collections date back to the 14th century. The London Borough of Hackney, has a strong sense of non-conformity identity, from religious outsiders to alternative life-stylers and political campaigners, many of whom are evidenced in the Borough's historic collections.
Hackney Archives moved to a new building in 2011 with an open and spacious searchroom, public PCs, microfilm readers, shop and exhibition and learning space. Three new storage areas were also constructed to provide archival storage of the highest quality, with space for future collection growth. Our new location in Hackney's popular Dalston is well connected on the Overground train lines (15 minutes from Kings Cross, 10 minutes from Stratford). it is a vibrant area of cafes, shops, gardens and the famous Ridley Road market on our doorstep.
Hackney Archives is ambitious and keen to lead the field in engaging non-users with archives, not only to deliver excellent customer service, but to create an inspiring customer experience that generates a wider social value for the Borough's historic collections. We are seeking a proactive and creative professional with a passion to engage people with archives.
The post of Archives Manager is full time (36 hours per week), permanent and pays £32,157 to £34,380 per annum with workplace benefits including 27 days annual leave (increasing to 32 days), sickness benefits and pension scheme.
If you too are ambitious and have a passion for public archives and how communities can benefit from engaging with them, then please read further information on the Hackney Council recruitment pages.
