Has anyone had any experience of insurance companies suggesting their motorised mobile shelving is a fire hazard? We have just installed archive standard motorised mobile shelving in our French archives, and on the first visit from our insurers they said we need to install a fire suppressant system for the motors. We do not have any form of fire suppressant system in the archive (other than hand held extinguishers) and I wondered whether people either had experience of the motors actually going on fire (and I obviously presume not because why on earth would we be using them if they did?), or whether most archives with this kind of shelving had a general fire suppressant system in the same room (gas, water etc)?
I have read over BS5454 and it seems to suggests that as long as the motors are covered there shouldn't be an issue.
