Do we need to be in the same physical location as our research participants to interview them? Are online video calls a viable alternative to the conventional physical co-present interview? If so, what are the potentials and pitfalls?
These questions are explored in a new training podcast - available on the National Centre for Research Methods YouTube channel http://youtu.be/qhhZdDcbAfo
The podcast looks at the implications of using internet video calls (e.g. Skype, FaceTime) in qualitative interviews with young people. It aims to encourage reflection on the potentials and pitfalls, particularly matters of concern to qualitative researchers such as rapport, disclosure and the research relationship.
It is the latest output from the 'Your Space: Siblings & Friends' project; a qualitative longitudinal study following the lives of young people from across Britain for over a decade.
