Dear colleagues,
the Institute for German Studies at the University of Birmingham warmly invites you to its final event this term, a seminar with eminent Professor Bill Niven (Nottingham Trent University) co-organised with the Department of Modern Languages (German Studies):
"Whither German Memory? Towards an Integrated Model of Remembering"
German memory appears to be at a crossroads: but what is on the other side? It is not that Germany is moving from a period of 'communicative' to 'cultural' memory, terms which are of limited value in themselves, let alone as explanatory paradigms in the current situation. Rather we seem to be dealing with another generational conflict, only this time it is easier to identify the generations being rejected – the 68ers and the 'Flakhelfer' generation – than it is the generations doing the rejecting. Bill Niven's paper will focus on this process of rejection, its causes, and its implications for the future of German memory.
WHEN: Wednesday, 25th March 2015, 4.15pm
WHERE: Strathcona, Lecture Theatre 6 (Edgbaston Campus, University of Birmingham, B15 2TT Birmingham)
*Please note this seminar was originally scheduled for 18 March, but had to be moved*
All Welcome!
Best regards,
Josefin
