Power and Corruption: Sporting Mega-Events, International Sports Organisations and the Future of Sport

Call for Participation:

In September 2014, Inter-Disciplinary.Net’s Sport project held its first Olympics workshop. On 14 July 2015, the project will run a second Olympics workshop that extends the focus to writers, campaigners, practitioners and academics interested in discussing their work on sporting mega-events and international sports organisations more broadly. The explicitly inter-disciplinary scope of the workshop is primed to examine issues arising out of the Olympics and its relationship to the IOC, the World Cup and its relationship to FIFA and any sport event and organisation that operates a global, professional and commercial. We are interested in the Olympics and the IOC, the World Cup and FIFA, but also any sport events and organisations that operate on a global, professional, commercial scale.



The workshop is a space to share work, grapple with ideas and ask questions. Discussions will be driven by two key questions: how does power corrupt international sport and sports mega-events? And how can modern, international sport reform itself? In order to generate a lively, inter-disciplinary dialogue, we welcome the submission of proposals and expressions of interests from people who are working across the subject fields of history, philosophy, sociology, cultural studies, leisure studies, ethics, theology, sports pedagogy, media studies, law, political studies and policy. We are especially keen to involve people involved in sports organisations, sports law, sport psychology, representatives of individual athletes, journalists and other professionals from outside academia, who can provide alternative voices and narratives. Submissions may deal with any aspect of:



- The Professionalization and Commercialization of Sports Governance

- The Globalization of Sports

- The Politics of Sports Mega-Events

- The Ethics of Sports Mega-Events



We invite expressions of interest for people thinking of attending and for them to send a statement of their interest and experience/expertise to the organising chairs by Friday 1st May 2015:

Schedule:

The day will begin with registration between 8.30 am and 9.30am Tuesday 14th July 2015 and will be followed by a series of presentation sessions and workshops. Refreshments and a 2 course sit-down lunch will be provided. After the final workshop and summation of the days discussions and the event will end with a wine reception.



Registration Fee: £TBC. This Includes:
