WORKSHOP RATIONALE
During the twenty-first century Mexico embarked in a process of social
policy expansion unprecedented in its history. New programmes have taken
social protection to groups of the population never reached before.
The expansion of social policy has not only been registered at the
national level, but also at the sub-national level. State governments
have significantly scaled up their involvement in a policy field in
which they had been largely absent, with great variations in the models
adopted for the design of their social policy and the strategies
followed for its implementation.
New research is required to comparatively evaluate the variety of
sub-national social programmes and the ideational and politico-economic
drivers that guide their formulation. This workshop brings together
academics from the UK and Mexico to explore theoretical and
methodological aspects of this research gap with the aim to contribute
to our understanding of the politics of social policy at sub-national
level as well as enhance our knowledge of social policy developments in
Mexico.

Office, Embassy of Mexico (UK)
