Hello everyone!
I have been waiting months to send this email out... SO EXCITING as I finally secured all my funding.
I'm a final year Microbiology PhD student working at University of Glasgow researching novel antibiotics. i.e I LOVE telling people about the problem of antibiotic resistance.
In my opinion, educating adults on this topic is NOT working and we need to turn our attention to school pupils. If we can change attitudes when young, these views will hopefully be maintained into adulthood.
Therefore, I decided to create a game to educate on antibiotic resistance. The game was first designed as a card game (funded by SGM, SoB) and was called Bacteria Combat. Twitter = @bacteriacombat
Bacteria Combat is played in the style of Pokemon / Top Trumps and includes antibiotic joker cards.
The card game was shown to be extremely effective at educating on antibiotic resistance and good/ bad bacteria and is now being turned into an app by an award winning game design company in Dundee; Future Fossil Studios.
The app is far more complex and absolutely stunning to look at!
Players must answer questions to unlock trump cards ; i.e E.coli for speed, Yersinia pestis for strength and can play against their friends through the school network.
Collaborating with Future Fossil has been one of the most rewarding things I have done in my whole life. I feel that we are strong evidence that research CAN be shown in different ways via unexpected collaborations and CAN have great impact through unique methods
The app is weeks away from completion and I need testers!
Our future plan is to create a website for the game similar to Hearthstone but this would require much more input and content from other Microbiology labs.
If anyone would like to test the app / discuss the project further or get involved in the Bacteria Combat movement please email me!
Best wishes,
Carla Brown
