Dear colleagues,
*36 hours left to register for 'Publish or Perish?: the past, present and future of the scientific periodical'*
Conference at the Royal Society of London, 19-21 March 2015
As a major activity to mark the 350th anniversary of the Philosophical Transactions, the world’s oldest scientific journal, the Royal Society is hosting a history of science conference in spring 2015. At a time when the future of scientific publishing is in flux, this conference will take the long perspective by examining the transformations and challenges in scientific journal publishing over the last three and a half centuries, and into the future.
The conference will feature contributions from scholars from across the globe, presenting research on all aspects of scientific journals from the seventeenth century to the twenty-first – their production, editorial practices, techniques of illustration, patterns of dissemination, reading, reception, and commercial viability, and how these varied with place and time.
The conference will also feature an exciting programme of evening events. Join us on Thursday the 19th of March at 17:30 for a public oral history event, in which Fellows of the Royal Society discuss the changing experience of scientific publishing in the 20th century; and at the same time on Friday the 20th of March for a roundtable discussion of the challenges and opportunities the scientific journal faces in the future. (Both events free to attend but booking essential; follow the links on the Conference page at the Royal Society (link here: https://royalsociety.org/events/2015/03/publish-or-perish/)
Anyone still wishing to register for this - there are about 15 places left - should do so in the next 36 hours.
With best wishes,
Noah Moxham
