Deadline 29 March 2015
We are seeking to appoint a full-time Senior Research Fellow to work on public health interventions that encourage incidental walking - the walking that occurs within existing activities such as shopping and work. Drawing on sociological and social-psychological theory, we are developing and researching incidental walking interventions as effective alternatives to the Exercise Referral Scheme programmes currently funded by local authorities. Many inactive people are unable or unwilling to participate in formal exercise, but are unaware of incidental walking and its potential health benefits. Our interventions are designed to help participants recognise their inactivity, increase awareness of incidental walking and develop walking self-efficacy. Our previous research shows that awareness of incidental walking can dramatically increase physical activity by showing people that they do not need to engage in hard-to-schedule walking or exercise sessions in order to become more active.
The researcher will work on a number of projects in this area, including research with the Royal Borough of Kingston and the London Borough of Sutton. Their main responsibilities are likely to relate to a project that will investigate GPs' referral habits and attitudes; segment the target population, and identify suitable promotion strategies. The incumbent may work on other projects within the Group - for example, writing literature reviews and grant proposals. In the first instance the contract is for 12 months but this may be extended if recent funding bids are successful.
The post-holder will be part of the Behaviour and Practice Research Group, a small, dynamic team of researchers and PhD students who apply sociology and social psychology to issues of behaviour and practice in the domains of sustainable behaviour, flood risk and long-term health. We recently completed a large EPSRC grant for research into community action and energy sustainability, and a 3-year, £1m project into the use of digital technologies to promote behaviour change. Led by Professor Ruth Rettie, the group offers a stimulating intellectual environment for anyone wanting to explore issues relating to social behaviour and social research methods. We also have strong links with policy makers in government - e.g. DECC and Defra.
