Semantic technologies present exciting opportunities in connecting data.
However linked data requires careful handling if it is to enhance the
preservation of cultural heritage. Following a successful collaborative
project funded by Semantic Media, historian Dr. Alison C Kay (iSchool,
Northumbria), computer scientists Dr. Gemma Webster (Aberdeen) and Dr. Hai
Nguyen (Aberdeen) and human geographer Dr. David Beel (Sheffield) are
organising a workshop to explore the issues and application of this
innovative technology for history and heritage.
Themes:
a) sustainable digital preservation platforms for community collections and
family histories;
b) the impact, practicality, usability and pitfalls of linked data in the
cultural heritage domain;
c) the combined impact as regards: whose heritage is this? identifying and
training the citizen archivist / historian.
d) multi-disciplinary collaboration;
e) obtaining funding!
Short papers, long papers and demonstrations of projects at all stages are
welcome to apply. Doctoral students welcome. Submission deadline May
1st. Please
register as a delegate using Eventbrite and email your proposal (1000 words
max) to Alison or Gemma.
