We similarly used stories and (some) multimedia to present collections of transport-related material in an easily digestible form for a NOF funded project (anyone remember those?). Three transport modes and within each of those up to 10 story themes that bring together a number of stories and objects within each theme. We actually had quite a lot of objects but the method works equally well for just a few.

Hi Linda

Useful thread this, thought I’d chip in.

A few months ago the Science Museum (the ‘big brother’ of where I work) launched their revised Online Science pages that focus on fewer objects but aims to augment the objects with stories and other rich media:

http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/online_science/explore_our_collections.aspx

It was initially done to support a specific exhibition (‘Information Age’), and technically was a pretty hefty piece of work. The intention is that it will grow over time to incorporate a wider variety of material but it certainly seems to match your aim of ‘doing more with less objects’.

Hope it’s useful.

Dan

Subject: [MCG] Examples of websites that showcase small numbers of collection items

Dear All

We are embarking on a new project to showcase our collections online. As a first step we want to concentrate on just a few items from our collections and I am very interested in looking at examples where this approach has been taken, please could people suggest websites that I should look at - good or bad examples would be equally useful!

Many thanks

Linda
