Leanne:
I second Tamara' suggestion. There is a lot out there these days on checklists. Other potential terms in the search strategy are highlighted here: http://www.biomedcentral.com/content/pdf/1472-6963-11-211.pdf using some of the concepts and their application to A&E may yield more ideas.
I also think that AHRQ PSNet primer might be helpful to get some grounding around the broader concepts
http://psnet.ahrq.gov/primer.aspx?primerID=14
I didn't see much on PSNET re; checklist use in the Emergency Department particularly. It may be more effective to look at the process or part of the care plan within the ER that hopes to be effected by the use of a checklist(handoffs or medication delivery).
I also suggest--if you are able--to ask the question on the National Patient Safety Foundation's general forum:
http://www.npsf.org/forums/Default.aspx it is freely available and you may be apt to get some good front line experiencial knowledge and insights from people who are in the midst of using checklists in the ER.
The California-based Emergency Medicine Patient Safety Foundation may also have some insights:
http://www.empsf.org/
Lastly - this book -- while not specifically oriented to checklist use--indirectly connects some of the concepts of successful checklist use to emergency department care:
Patient Safety in Emergency Medicine.
Croskerry P, Cosby KS, Schenkel SM, Wears RL, eds. Philadelphia, PA: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins; 2009.
ISBN: 9780781777278.
I can help connect you with some of the authors of the book if you'd like to follow up with them directly.
Good luck!

Hello Leanne,
Briefly, to complement the WHO website information on the Surgical Safety Checklist, you may find these resources of interest:
- Canadian Patient Safety Institutes' Safer Healthcare Now! program has information and tools for download (free) on the Surgical Safety Checklist <http://www.saferhealthcarenow.ca/EN/Interventions/SurgicalSafetyChecklist/Pages/default.aspx>
- Here is one on many articles on the Checklist - this one is from the publisher Longwoods and looks at patient safety
Hayes C. Surgical safety checklist: improved patient safety through effective teamwork. Healthc Q. 2012;15 Spec No:57-62. Available from: http://www.longwoods.com/content/22840
- A quick search in PubMed will yield many recent articles on the Checklist as well.
Hope this helps. Plese feel free to contact me if I can assist further.

Subject: Use of WHO surgical checklist in A&E
Afternoon library warriors,
I hope this finds you well.
I have been asked to see if there is any information on the use of the WHO surgical checklist (or a version of) in A&E or indeed the use of any checklists in A&E (similar to the WHO surgical checklist).
(I have started a search in HDAS but something odd is happening and I am not sure of the results I am getting back so I am investigating) but user is after information fairly quickly- hence my request.
Is anyone aware of such a checklist?
Thanks ever so much.
