This is an interesting question! I wonder if anyone is doing this with their ‘next gen’ library services platform? It seems this is exactly the sort of capability they might deliver as part of their analytics capabilities. It’s notable I think that analytics is the first element of the Intota platform. Is this the kind of thing it could do? I thought I also copy this thread to LIS-E-Resources to see if anyone there has done something like this

Subject: Re: [Eril-l] Cyclical Review of E-Resources?
We have a rotating review, so each year we do something. Stacks (includes eBooks), Databases, Reference, Journals (Includes eJournals)
For Databases, we look at each database (nearly 200) and divide these up among the appropriate librarians (we have 12). The E-Resources librarian gathers information in a large spreadsheet to show information including:
· Proxy server statistics
· Vendor statistics
· Overlap analysis information
· Pricing
Each librarian reviews the database & writes a note in the spreadsheet of why we should or should not keep it. For example, “I like this database very much and it is helpful for several programs, but the usage seems low. Keep for now.” The librarian ranks each database to show its value. 1=Cancel 2=Cancel if funding is needed 3=Important & fills niche 4=Essential. Librarians are encouraged not to say everything is essential.
We also have full review sheets that ask questions like History (such as was it added in the last two years, was it recommended by a faculty member) and interface (ease of use, functionality, etc.) These are useful for new librarians who aren’t used to the review process, but many veterans don’t use them.

Subject: [Eril-l] Cyclical Review of E-Resources?
Hi All,
I’m wondering if some libraries cyclically review their e-resources? I’m not just talking about reviewing usage statistics before renewing but rather a holistic review of existing resources - perhaps by subject area. This could include the consideration of competing products, overlap analysis, patron satisfaction, etc.
If you do this, how do you do it and how frequently?
Please share any experience you might have on this.
Thanks!
Charlie
