**APPLICATIONS INVITED FOR FULLY FUNDED PHD PLACES WITHIN THE CENTRE FOR SOCIAL INFORMATICS AT EDINBURGH NAPIER UNIVERSITY**
Edinburgh Napier University is currently advertising funded PhD studentships that will be of interest to those in the library and information science community. If you have a good first degree (2.1 or first) and a Masters degree (or hold a good first degree and will complete your Masters degree by October 2015), and have ambitions to study for a PhD, please read on. (Please also note that excellent written and oral communication skills in English are prerequisites of any successful application.)
Two opportunities are described here. The first, which invites students to outline their own research projects, requires submission of application documentation that includes a research proposal by Friday 10th April. The second, which is for a project that has already been agreed with the funders, requires submission of an application form (but not a proposal) by Monday 20th April. **1: STUDENTSHIPS FUNDED BY EDINBURGH NAPIER UNIVERSITY (25 places in total)**
Edinburgh Napier University is currently inviting applications for 25 fully-funded PhD studentships across a range of research areas. Included in these areas are six topics of relevance to the research interests of the library and information science community. These are:
* e-Government
* Information policy
* Information seeking behaviour and use
* Knowledge management
* Online communities
* Open data and open government

**2: STUDENTSHIP HOSTED WITHIN THE CENTRE FOR SOCIAL INFORMATICS AT EDINBURGH NAPIER UNIVERSITY, CO-FUNDED BY THE ESRC SCOTTISH GRADUATE SCHOOL OF SOCIAL SCIENCES DOCTORAL TRAINING CENTRE AND SKILLS DEVELOPMENT SCOTLAND (1 place)**
This doctoral study, hosted by the Centre for Social Informatics at Edinburgh Napier University (http://www.iidi.napier.ac.uk/c/main/site/csi), will investigate innovation and best practice in skills development in the workplace in Scotland, drawing comparisons with the rest of the UK and other countries. The successful candidate, whose interests will include knowledge management and organisational learning, will explore how employee-led workforce learning can be encouraged to deliver innovation that leads to competitive advantage, employment growth, and increased productivity. The aims of the proposed work are to:
1. Identify factors that underpin successful workplace learning and innovation.
2. Determine how skills innovation in the workplace is facilitated by organisational culture and strategy.
3. Demonstrate how a skills agency can support innovation in the workplace.
4. Formulate practical and workable recommendations to policy makers concerned with the skills agenda in Scotland.
