Hi Phil
That would explain my lack of success getting to Historic Places LA - we are still on IE9 at work and can only have one browser due to our interpretation of PSN requirements. We should be moving to IE11 before too long though.
I will have a look from home.
Thanks,
Jon

Hi Chris,
If you're not using the latest version of Internet Explorer then you will have issues. It's optimized for IE 10, Firefox, Chrome or Safari.

Hi,
Exciting maybe, but I tried to look at HistoricPlacesLA. At which point everything froze.
Now it could be a problem at this end, or somewhere in between, but it does not on first sight bode well for running something similar here.

Hi Phil,
"Arches can be run on the Cloud"
That's quite exciting! How much of the final product would need to be deployed locally in that case? Would it simply be a case of hosting the underlying database?
I ask because my IT guys have been doing a certain amount of teeth-sucking and tutting over Arches, and anything I can do to assuage them would be very helpful!

Hi Jon,
Agreed, the technology 'stack' can be daunting, especially for risk-averse IT departments. It's worth noting that Arches can be run on the Cloud and indeed this is the exact reason that Historic Places LA is run on the cloud.
I'll aim to get more technical details for the summer HERForum.

Thanks very much Chris, and also thanks to Phil to all the others who replied, it has helped us gather our thoughts. The biggest hurdle for us using Arches will not be the functionality but the technology 'stack', in particular the use of PostgreSQL and PostGIS as we are mainly MS SQL Server and Oracle here. Things may change but there is not much enthusiasm for introducing more diversity in our infrastructure but I am personally very keen on open source. I might even have a go at home!
I will keep the summer meeting in mind!
Best regards,
Jon

I'm happy to confirm that Phil Carlisle will be explaining ARCHES at the HER Forum summer meeting on 8 July. If there is further interest after that, we may be able to get someone from Getty to a subsequent meeting.

Hi Jon,
My understanding is that Arches 3.0 is the underlying platform which includes a CIDOC-CRM compliant graph database and a SKOS-compliant Reference Data Manager.
Currently the Arches platform is being used for a variety of uses with purpose-built packages, recording modules if you will, plugged into core Arches. If memory serves the first commercial user of Arches is Caltrans - the California Department of Transportation who are using it internally to manage the road infrastructure for the whole of California.
The latest implementation which is more relevant to Cultural Heritage is HistoricPlacesLA.
This is built on Arches 3.0 with a Heritage Inventory Package (HIP) 1.0 which handles the recording forms.
HistoricPlacesLA is the public facing front end for SurveyLA which is tasked with identifying Historic Resources and Districts within the City of Los Angeles, this involves visiting 800,000 parcels of land and evaluating whether the buildings and sites are worth recording. As you can imagine with such a vast number of sites this project is ongoing.
HistoricPlacesLA currently holds 18,608 Historic Resources (mainly buildings) and 159 Historic Districts (similar to our conservation areas) see http://www.historicplacesla.org/
Any UK implementation would obviously need to modify the HIP to meet UK needs as it is currently focused on allowing sites to be recorded and evaluated according to US standards.

Hi all
Just wondered if anyone in the UK is using Arches yet (archesproject.org), is testing it, has evaluated it or has even considered it for their HER? That is the web based application, not the "Archaeological Resources in Cultural Heritage a European Standard" as detailed on the ADS website.
The about to be available v3.0 looks very interesting and looks as if it would be easier to implement than previous versions as long as we are able to accommodate the technology required.
We are currently in a position where we need to decide to spend money on a proprietry solution, redevelop our in-house existing system (possibly using SQL Server/K2/Sharepoint/QGIS/Geoserver) or look at other options, including open source such as Arches. They obviously all have cost implications, some more up front than others!
Any information/contacts would be useful.
Best regards,
Jon
