With apologies for cross-posting!
Undergraduates and postgraduates studying German Studies at a UK university are reminded that the deadlines for the following Oxford German Olympiad competitions is noon, Friday, 3rd April. We at the Oxford German Network look forward to receiving your entries!
1. Camden House – Book Proposal
Closing date: 12 noon, Friday, 3 April 2015
The competition invites participants to write a book proposal on a topic in the field of German literature and/or film that would make a successful and important book and would fit the profile established by Camden House in German studies.
There will be two prizes, one each for a submission by an undergraduate and a graduate of German studying at a UK university. Research students are eligible up to 4 years from commencement of a doctoral course.
Each submission should consist of the following, in English or German: 1) A contents page giving the title and chapter headings (1 side of A4); 2) A description of the book (maximum of 300 words). It should be written so that, while appropriate for an expert, it is readily comprehensible to a well-educated non-specialist and indeed draws such a reader in. As such, it is important that it first establish the context and importance of the topic before going into what the book does with it.
The competition will be co-judged by members of the Oxford German Network and Camden House. The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. The two winners will each be awarded a prize consisting of EITHER a cash (cheque) prize of £100 OR books of their choice published by Camden House up to a value of £ 150 and invited to a prize-giving ceremony at the Bodleian Library, University of Oxford, on 23 June 2015.
Entrants for the graduate prize whose proposal relates to an actual project are asked to submit a separate statement if they wish their project to be considered for publication by Camden House. They should send this statement to the following address: [log in to unmask], subject line: Camden House – Book Proposal. The award of the prize does not depend on submission of such a statement. Entries received after the deadline at 12 noon on Friday 3 April 2015 will not be considered.
2. Wiener Library Translation Competition - A Witness to the Holocaust
The Wiener Library for the Study of the Holocaust & Genocide is the world’s oldest institution devoted to the study of the Holocaust, its causes and legacies. The letter at the centre of this competition is a testimony from the Library’s archive. It was written in 1946 by Victor Klemperer, whose diaries kept throughout the Nazi era are among the most important first-hand sources concerning daily life for Jewish people in the Third Reich.
The competition is open to undergraduates (second year and above) and graduates of German studying at a UK university.
Each submission should consist of two parts: 1) A translation into English of the letter (download here: http://www.ogn.ox.ac.uk/sites/default/files/olympiad_rd_2_2015_-_wiener_library_klemperer_translation.pdf), which is part of the Wiener Library’s collection Testaments to the Holocaust. 2) A comment on the testimony, explaining its importance (max. 300 words), written in English or German.
The competition will be co-judged by members of the Oxford German Network and The Wiener Library for the Study of the Holocaust & Genocide. The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
