Hi Susanne
In order to access PAs via funding from County Councils disabled people are
referred to as disabled employers.

Subject: SV: Research about personal assistance - call for participants (PAs
and disabled employers)
Doesn't your 3rd query - "if (and how) they think personal assistance could
be changed for the better" - imply that personal assistance is less than
good now? And do you mean better for them personally or better organised as
a public service? Also, I didn't know there were such a thing as a "disabled
employer". In my innocence I thought there were employers and employees. But
who knows .. maybe you social model guys can explain if there's more classes
of employers out there.
Sorry to be a bit brutal. There's few things that irritate me nowadays. I
guess you just caught me on a bad day.
Susanne

Ämne: Research about personal assistance - call for participants (PAs and
disabled employers)
Hello all
I am a PhD student in the Centre for Disability Studies at the University of
Leeds, and I am looking for people interested in taking part in my PhD
research about personal assistance for disabled people.
I want to interview two groups of people:
- disabled people who employ or have employed personal assistants (PAs);
- and people who work or have worked as PAs.
I want to interview both groups of people about:
- their experiences of employing, or working as, PAs;
- their thoughts and opinions about personal assistance and how it works at
present;
- and if (and how) they think personal assistance could be changed for the
better.
Each interview will probably take around 1-2 hours (but can be split into
shorter parts if necessary for accessibility reasons). I can either travel
to meet you (within the UK) and interview you at a place of your choosing,
or I can interview you by phone or Skype (audio or video call).
If you would like to take part in this research, but you have access issues
that would make any of these options difficult for you, please contact me
and we can arrange an interview in a form that is accessible for you.
For further information about my research, see my research website:

If you are interested in taking part in this research, please reply to this
email or fill in the contact form on my website:

If you have any concerns about this research, you can also contact my
supervisors, Dr Alison Sheldon and Dr Simon Prideaux, at

If you know anyone else who you think may be interested in this research,
please forward this email to them or give them the link to my website.
Thanks in advance
