University of East Anglia
Postgraduate Translation Symposium
Call for Papers
Untranslatability
21st and 22nd November 2015
The School of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing and the School of Politics, Philosophy, Politics, Philosophy, Language and Communication Studies are pleased to announce the sixth Postgraduate Translation Symposium at the University of East Anglia. The symposium explores new perspectives and conceptualisations of untranslatability which go beyond traditional comparisons of target texts with their sources. The issue of untranslatability is an important topic to address in light of current debates surrounding world literature, but the spectre of untranslatability has haunted translation theory since its inception.
We are delighted to welcome Prof. Theo Hermans (UCL), Prof. Kirsten Malmkjær (University of Leicester), Dr Joanna Drugan (UEA) and Dr Duncan Large (UEA) as Keynote Speakers.
We invite submissions for presentations in English by postgraduate research students, academics and professionals across a wide range of disciplines. Fields of particular interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- translatability/untranslatability
- linguistic aspects of untranslatability
- stylistic loss and gain
- translating silence
- ineffability in translation
- world literature and untranslatability
- genre and relative translatability
- philosophy in translation
- historical and contemporary perspectives on untranslatability
- translation across media
- translating between specific language pairs
- practical aspects of untranslatability
- linguistic and cultural consequences of the untranslatable
There will be limited space for poster presentations.
