CFP for Edinburgh Companion to Women’s Print Media in Britain, 1690-1820, ed. Jennie Batchelor (Kent) and Manushag Powell (Purdue)
The editors of this volume, the first in an exciting new five-volume research companion series for Edinburgh University Press, welcome abstracts on women and print media (primarily periodicals and magazines) in the long eighteenth century.
The Companion will provide a set of historically, politically and socially nuanced theme-based chapters (around 30 in total), divided into around half a dozen appropriate sections.
We would especially welcome proposals for essays on:
• the history of the eighteenth-century women’s periodical
• the emergence of the women’s magazine
• publication practices (editorial policy, ownership, circulation and distribution)
• case studies of individual magazines, periodicals and media (especially The Female Tatler, The Ladies Mercury, The Old Maid)
• women as editors and reviewers
• women contributors to periodicals and magazine
• engravings, illustrations, and/or advertisements
• the periodical marketplace, collaboration and competition
• politics and the women’s periodical/magazine
• women’s periodicals and female celebrity
• European women in British periodicals
• women and colonial newspapers/periodicals/magazines
• fashion and the women’s magazine
• women’s periodicals and the ‘literary’.
The deadline for abstracts is APRIL 30, 2015. Please send abstracts of no more than 500 words to Jennie Batchelor ([log in to unmask]) and Nush Powell ([log in to unmask]). Completed essays will be no more than 7000 words in length for anticipated submission in September 2016.
