Dear all,
Back in 1991 al large tefrite block was found in the vicinity of remains of the Roman bridge in the river Meuse near Cuijk.
This block contained the remains of an iron O-ring attached in a deep hole in the block, secured with lead.
The O-ring held an iron ring, that left its wear-marks on the block. Its purpose is supposed to have something to do with mooring ships...
Although it was found near structures of the Roman bridge as it shows all characteristics of Roman engineering (cut-marks on of the block, the kins of holes for attachment to other blocks and the use of lead for securing the iron O-ring), we had liked to have more prove for it to be Roman (or disprove).
Are there, by your knowledge, techniques to discriminate Roman from medieval or even modern iron and lead ?
I am looking forward to your reactions and suggestions.
Best regards,
Peter Seinen
